DESCRIPTION: It is a broad leaf deciduous tree reaching 15-20 m in height and 0.6-1 m in dbh. It may live up to 300-350 years. It has an open, irregularly shaped crown. The bark is flaky and grey. Leaves resemble those of chestnut (Castanea spp.) they are shallowly lobed with serrate margins. The fruit is an acorn 2-3 cm long. A mossy-like fringed cup covers from
one-third to one-half of the acorn. USE: The wood is heavy, hard and machines well, but it can check and warp if not dried properly. It is used for furniture, flooring, boxes, crates, barrels, kegs, ships and boats. It is a good browse tree for wild life and has been planted along motorways. GROWING PERIOD: Perennial. COMMON NAMES: Swamp white oak. FURTHER INF: It can be found in the north central and north-eastern mixed forests in the United States. It is often found at swamp edges, in low flats or bottomlands, along stream banks and on moist peaty flats. It can withstand heavy, poorly-drained soils but also drought. It is often found on mineral soils that are imperfectly to poorly drained.
