BRIEF DESCRIPTION A large branched, trailing and climbing subshrub with deep lilac to deep pink flowers. USES It is used as a fodder and pasture grass for cattle. GROWING PERIOD Perennial, growing 240-300 days from spring to autumn. Total yields increase with longer cutting intervals of 30-85 days. Even with appropriate grazing management and a suitable environment, greenleaf desmodium may only persist for 5-10 years. COMMON NAMES Greenleaf desmodium, Pega-pega, Kuru vine, Amor seco, Beggarlice,
Karikut-ritkut, Thua kleen leap, Tick clovers. FURTHER INF Scientific synonyms: D. aparines, D. hjalmarsonii, D. trigonum, Hedysarum intortum, Meibomia intorta. Greenleaf desmodium is native of Central America and northwest South America. It can be found from sea level in the subtropics, but favours elevations between 500 and 2500 m in the tropics. The latitudinal range is between 30°N and 30°S. Best performance is obtained when it is grown on slopes. Dry matter production may be about 6-19 t/ha. It often occur as a weed in coffee plantations.
