BRIEF DESCRIPTION A legume with fibrous to woody trailing and creeping stems reaching up to 30-60 cm in height. It has a deep, branched root system. Leaves trifoliate, flowers reddish or lavender and pods 2.5-4 cm long with four to seven seeds. USES Used for pasture and withstands heavy grazing. KILLING T Fairly tolerant of frost. GROWING PERIOD Perennial summer-growing legume. Good growth in wet season, reduced in the dry season. Flowers in about 90 days in north Queensland and in 51-81 days in Hawaii. COMMON NAMES Kaimi clover, Kaimi, Pega-pega, Creeping beggar bean, Creeping beggar weed. FURTHER INF Scientific synonyms: D. canum, D. supinum, D. sparsifolium, Hedysarum canum, H. racemosum, Aeschynomene spicata. Kaimi clover is native of the Americas from southern United States to Argentina. In the southern hemisphere Kaimi clover extend south as far as 27°S. It occurs from sea level to 900 m in Hawaii, and up to 1700 m in Colombia, but it is generally most suited for elevations below 300 m. Dry matter production is about 5-6.5 t/ha.
