Notes
BRIEF DESCRIPTION: A small to medium sized deciduous tree reaching 6-25 m in height. The trunk may reach 0.8-1.0 m in breast height diameter. It is often bent, crooked or forked.
GROWING PERIOD: Fast-growing perennial. The tree can withstand drought periods of up to 7-8 months. COMMON NAMES:
Euphrates poplar, Tana river poplar, Bahan, Bhan, Hotung, Hodung, Gharab, Palk, Saf-saf, Indian poplar, Malalai, Lalaftu, Mugui, Tu Hu Lake, We Wu Er, Chopo de Elche, Makini, Siricha, Gucuba, Pahtah, Gharab, Palk, Saf-saf, Pade, Farat Kavagi, Yabani Kavak, Gildir Kavak, Alca Kavak.
FURTHER INF: Scientific synonyms: P. diversifolia, P. ariana, P. mauritanica, P. bonnetiana, P. litwinowiana, P. glaucicomans, P. illicitana, P. denhardtiorum. Euphrates poplar has a wide geographical distribution from the Mediterranean region over western and central Asia to China and Kenya. Its altitudinal range is between equator and 48°N and it can be found at elevations from below sea level in western Asia to 4000 m in western Tibet. It is usually a riverine species and the water requirement of the tree may not depend only on the rainfall. It is mentioned as a possible agroforestry species.
