BRIEF DESCRIPTION
A needleleaf, evergreen, coniferous tree usually reaching a height of 20-30 m and a trunk diameter of 30-60 cm, though it may reach 45 m and 135 cm in diameter. USES Wood utilized for general utility lumber, construction, boat building, veneer, pulpwood, posts, and firewood. Oleoresin is extracted from old stumps. The tree is palnted as an ornamental. Mentioned as a possible agroforestry species. GROWING PERIOD Perennial. COMMON NAMES Honduran pine, Pino hondureno. FURTHER INF Scientific synonym: P. hondurensis. This Carribean pine is native of the Atlantic lowland from northern Belize to northern Nicaragua. It can be found at elevations from sea level to 1000 m. The tree occur naturally within the latitudinal range of 12-18°N. Optimum annual wood production is 40 m3/ha up to the thirteenth year of growth. The tree is fire resistant and tolerates salt winds.
