GROWING PERIOD Perennial evergreen tree, though the tree in dry localities can become leafless for a short time in the hot season. COMMON NAMES Banyan, Bor, Bar, Bargat, Wad, Al, Alada, Ala, Pyinyaung. FURTHER INF Scientific synonym: F. indica, Urostigma bengalense. Banyan can be found at elevations between 500-1200 m. The tree occur naturally within the latitudinal range of 10-30°N. The tree can reach a height of 20-30 m and crown covers of more than 65 m in diameter are not rare. Banyan is drought hardy. In the forest it can be a very noxious weed, occupying a large amount of space to the exclusion of more useful species. Further it is very destuctive to walls and buildings and extremely difficult to eradicate. |
