BRIEF DESCRIPTION A tall tree reaching up to 40 m in height, the trunk is buttressed and can reach up to 1 m in diameter. The fruit is an ovoid drupe, 3-6 cm x 2-3 cm. USES The seeds are used as food. The seeds can be used as a substitute for almonds in confectionery. Oil from the seeds is used as a substitute for coconut oil and for cooking and illumination. The wood is used as firewood. It is a good shade tree, used for nutmeg groves and also as a roadside and street tree. GROWING PERIOD Perennial. COMMON NAMES Java-almond, Kanari, Kenari ambon, Jal, Kanari bagea, Galip, Lawele, Hinuei. FURTHER INF Scientific synonyms: C. amboinense, C. moluccanum, C. commune, C. zephyrinum. Java-almond can be found in Malaysia and New Guinea, it is cultivated at elevations between sea level and 600 m in the rain forests, but can be found up to 1000 m. | Sources |
