BRIEF DESCRIPTION A medium sized to tall tree 15-20 m or up to 70-80 m in height, while the trunk may reach a diameter of 200 cm. Under favourable forest conditions the form is good and the bole straight and up to 2/3 of the tree height. In more poor situations the trunk branches earlier and the tree may even be reduced to a shrub on wind exposed sites. Heartwood light yellowish brown, open-textured, grain usually interlocked, distinct growth rings, strong and moderately durable. USES The wood is used for light and heavy construction, poles, piles and railway sleepers. GROWING PERIOD Perennial. (AGLS; Growing period per year 160-230 days), (Edwards; 240-270 days). The tree can reach 20 m in 4.5 years in Tasmania, and 15 m in 3 years in India. The trees are normally grown on rotations of 5-15 years. COMMON NAMES Tasmanian blue gum, Southern blue gum, Blue gum, Fever tree. FURTHER INF In the tropics, tasmanian blue gum can be grown at altitudes between 1500-3000 m. In Tasmania, it can be found from sea level to about 450 m. The species is indigenous to the eastern part of Tasmania and southern part of Victoria. The natural latitudinal range in Australia and Tasmania is 38.5-43.5°S. The tree thrives in moist valleys in hilly areas but can also be found on gently undulating country near the sea. Optimum annual wood production is 10-40 m3/ha.
