Latitude:

Altitude: It is generally grown between 1800-2200 m in the central Andes, between 1100-2700 m in Colombia and between 900-3200 in Peru.

Temperature: Reported temperature range for growth is 5-25°C with the optimum between 15-22°C. It does not tolerate frequent frosts.

Water: Reported annual rainfall range for growth is 450-1800 mm with the optimum between 600-1500 mm. It does not tolerate long periods of drought, especially during early stages of establishment.

Radiation

Range & intensity: It is a pioneer species that grows best in full sunlight, but trees can tolerate some shade in the early stages of growth.

Photoperiodism: The trees requirements are unknown, but other members of the genus set seed to the limits of the subtropics.

Soil:

Physical: The tree grows well in loose-textured sandy loams and in heavy clay soils and can grow in a wide range of well drained soil.

Chemical: It does not grow well in strongly acidic soils. Reported soil pH range for growth is 4.5-8 with the optimum between 5.5-7.
