BRIEF DESCRIPTION A vigorous, glabrous, branching grass ascending from a decumbent base, commonly 1 m or more high with flat leaf-blades, 10-15 mm wide. USES It is usually cut for green chop, but can also be used for pasture. When grazed the cattle should let on when the grass is 50-60 cm tall and there should be only one grazing. It also makes good hay and silage. GROWING PERIOD Perennial grass. May be grown with a cutting interval of 40-90 days. COMMON NAMES Janeiro, Carib grass, Malojilla, Lierba del Caribe. FURTHER INF Scientific synonym: E. polystachya. Janeiro is native of the Carribean region. The latitudinal range is 24°S to 20°N. It can be found at elevations between sea level and 1800 m and is common in moist places. It has little drought tolerance. Yields of green herbage of up to 175 t/ha have been reported. | Sources |
