BRIEF DESCRIPTION An erect grass up to 90 cm high with geniculate or erect culms. Inflorescence a fairly open panicle. USES It is not very palatable but eaten when young by cattle, horses and sheep. It has a disagreeable odour when fresh. In Lesotho the grains are used in time of famine for human food. GROWING PERIOD Annual grass growing in the summer. COMMON NAMES Grey love grass, Strink grass, Black grass. FURTHER INF Scientific synonym: E. major. Grey love grass is native of the Mediterranean region. In Kenya, it can be found at elevations between sea level and 2250 m. It is widespread as a weed, especially on poor soils, and therefore best omitted from seeding programmes.
