BRIEF DESCRIPTION A dioecious shrub or small tree reaching 4-7 m in height, with spiny branches. Fruit a subglobose berry, up to 2.5 cm in diameter, maroon-purple and pubescent. USES The fruits are mostly used for making preserves as the are often too sour and astringent to be eaten raw. GROWING PERIOD Perennial. Begins to bear 3-4 years after sowing. COMMON NAMES Ketembilla, Ceylon Gooseberry, Ketembillier, Groseillier de Ceylon, Quetembila. FURTHER INF Ketembilla is native of Sri Lanka and India. It is grown throughout tropical Asia, particularly India and Sri Lanka. It prefer a high air humidity and it require a good supply of warter during fruit development.
