BRIEF DESCRIPTION A bamboo with dense clumps and with culms 10-15 m tall and 2.5-7.5 cm in diameter. The bamboo is deciduous, or evergreen under more moist conditions. KILLING T Frost-hardy within its natural habitat. GROWING PERIOD Perennial. Life-cycle about 20-40 years. COMMON NAMES Male bamboo, Bans, Kiribidru,, Kal mungil, Myinwa. FURTHER INF Scientific synonym: Bambusa stricta. Male bamboo can grow 7-17 m high. This is the commonest, most widespread and most universally used bamboo in India. There it is typically found in hilly country at elevations between sea level and 1200 m. Bamboos grow between the latitudes 40°N and S. Though the big bamboo forests usually occur between 15-25°N and S. |
