BRIEF DESCRIPTION A medium-sized to tall deciduous nearly evergreen tree reaching a height of 45 m. The bole is straight or only slightly twisted and usually branchless for 3-12 m with a diameter of up to 180 cm, buttresses prominent. Leaves with 3-7 leaflets. USES The timber is used for high-class furniture, cabinets and as a decorative timber. It is suitable for marine and aircraft grade plywood and, owing to its beautiful colour and figur, for decorative veneer. It is also used for all kinds of construction work, for doors, window frames and wagon building. It is used for heavy-duty tools such as hammers, axes and ploughs. It is a good wood for carving, engraving and turnery. The tree is planted as a shade tree. GROWING PERIOD Perennial. COMMON NAMES Blackwood, Indian rosewood, Rosewood, Bombay blackwood, Palisandre de l'Inde, Sitsal, Shisham, Sissu, Biti, Jitengi, Itti, Thothagatti, Sonokeling, Sonobrits, Sonosunga. FURTHER INF Blackwood occurs in Nepal, western and northeastern India and Java. It is planted in mainland South-East Asia and in Africa. It can, in India, be found at elevations between sea level and 1500 m, while in Java it occur at elevations up to 600 m. It is often found in relative moist situations near streams but older trees can be very drought-resistant.
