BRIEF DESCRIPTION A medium sized to tall evergreen tree, usually less than 20 m but it can reach a height of 38 m. The trunk can reach a diameter of 180 cm, it is often straight, but forked in the crown. USES Timber is very durable in contact with ground and water. It is used for boat building, joinery, drafting tables, turnery and carving. GROWING PERIOD Perennial. Trees with an age of up to 2300 years have been recorded. COMMON NAMES Huon pine. FURTHER INF In Tasmania, its latitudinal range is between 41.5-43.5°S and the altitudinal range is from sea level to 1000 m, though it usually occur below 150 m. It often occurs in rugged country along banks of rivers, on swampy flats or near lake shores in soils that seem to have free water in the profile throughout the year. (pH estimated by the compiler).
