BRIEF DESCRIPTION A shrub or small tree reaching a height of 3-15 m with a rather dense crown and zig-zag twigs. The pod is kidney-shaped, 3-9 cm long, fleshy, brownish-green and hanging from the trunk. USES The mature fruit can be eaten fresh or cooked with sugar. It can also be made into fruit salad or pickled. The tree makes a good ornamental and is also grown as a bonsai plant. GROWING PERIOD Perennial. Seedling trees begin to flower after about 6 years. Pods mature in about 2 months. COMMON NAMES Namnam, Namu-namu, Kopi anjing, Puki, Puki anjing, Amphawa, Nang-ai, Hima. FURTHER INF Namnam probably originated in eastern Malesia. It thrives in wet tropical lowlands, but may also grow well in climates with a more distinct dry season. It is resitant to wind. (pH estimated by the compiler).
