BRIEF DESCRIPTION A soft hairy herb with a trailing habit. The fruit has a hard peduncle, is 5-angled, with a corky swelling at the point of attachment, is variable in size, with white or pale yellow flesh and coarse texture and soft fibres. The seeds are white or brown, containing 40-50% oil, 30% protein. USES Fruits and seeds are edible. The seeds also yield an edible oil. GROWING PERIOD Annual herb, fruits may be harvested 170-190 days after sowing. COMMON NAMES Winter squash, Pumpkin, Ayote, Mixta squash, Squash. FURTHER INF Winter squash is indigenous to Central America and Mexico. It can be grown at low to medium altitudes. Yields are up to 12 t/ha. Mentioned as a useful agroforestry species.
