BRIEF DESCRIPTION A small to medium-sized evergreen tree reach 15-20 or 30 m in height, with rough furrowed bark. USES Wood is durable in water and can be used for shipbuilding and firewood and charcoal. Crushed leaves used as fish poison. GROWING PERIOD Perennial. Early growth of more than 2.5 m per year has been achieved in irrigated plantations. COMMON NAMES Damas, Damask, Sammas, Hodeti, Ghalab. FURTHER INF Damas can be found at elevations from sea level to 1000 m. The tree occur naturally within the latitudinal range of 10-11°N. The species is indigenous to areas appended to intermittent watercourses in northern Somalia and in the southwestern part of the Arabian Peninsula. It appears to be dependant on consistenly contact with the water table. Annual wood production potential is 5-10 m3/ha. Under irrigation however, obtimum yields of about 21 m3/ha have been obtained.
