BRIEF DESCRIPTION A small evergreen tree reaching up to 12 m in height and with a trunk diameter up to 40 cm. It usually have low, flexible, upright branches and dense dark-green foliage and clusters of whitish fruits, about 2.5 cm in diameter. USES The slightly acidic fruits are eaten fresh or processed into jam or jelly. A kind of sparkling wine can be made by fermenting the fruit with sugar. Immature fruits are used in preparations for treating bronchitis. The leaves and fruits have several medicinal properties. Its dense growth makes it a good hedge plant. GROWING PERIOD Perennial. KILLING TEMP. It survives short slight frosts of about -2°C, but trees have been killed at -6°C. COMMON NAMES Wampee, Vampi, Wampi, Wong pei, Wang-pei, Wampoi, Uampi, Galumpi, Huampit, Kantrop, So ma fai, Somz maf'ai, Ueng-tuai, Mafai cheen, Mafai-chin, Som mafai, Hong bi, Gioi. FURTHER INF Scientific synonym: C. wampi. C. punctata, Quinaria lansium, Cookia wampi. Wampee is native of southern China. It occur in forests, forest edges, gallery forests, wooded grasslands and in secondary regrowth near villages. In humid tropical climates, it can be found at elevations between sea level and 2450 m. Well-developed mature trees can produce up to 45 kg fruits per season. (pH estimated by the compiler).
