Notes
BRIEF DESCRIPTION A medium sized to tall evergreen or deciduous tree 20-30 m or up to 40 m tall, while the trunk is 50-150 cm in diameter. With short and soft branchlets. USES The wood makes a good fuel. The timber can be used for parquet flooring, packing cases, veneer, and barrel staves. Young trees are grazed by livestock and the tree provides good drought fodder. The tree can be used as an ornamental, for wind protection, shelterbelts, sand dune stabilisation, and riverbank and irrigation channel protection. A dye can be extracted from the leaves. It is mentioned as a possible agroforestry species. GROWING PERIOD Fast-growing and long-lived perennial. COMMON NAMES River sheoak, Creek oak, River oak, River-oak casuarina, Kasa, Beefwood, Australian pine, Pino Australiano, Pino de Australia, Pino, Pino de mar, Casuarina cavalinha, Mvinje, Jangli saru, Jan. FURTHER INF River sheoak is native of eastern and northern Australia. It can be found at elevations between sea level and 1000 m, and at latitudes between 12-38°S. As the tree is of riverine occurrence, rainfall alone is no indication of the total moisture requirement. It is mainly restricted to rivers and stream banks and adjacent valley flats, but it may extend for a short distance up rocky hillsides above watercourses. It is often planted along streams to protect river banks. Photosynthesis pathway C3. The tree fixes nitrogen.
