BRIEF DESCRIPTION small to medium sized tree reaching 10-25 m in height, while the trunk may reach 75 cm in diameter. Young trees usually have a good form with straight trunks, horizontal branches and conic crowns of dark green, shinning leaves. Older trees have open crowns with decumbent lower branches. Sapwood pale, heartwood pale grey to light brown or almost black, texture fine, straight grain and soft. USES The black wood is used for turnery and other speciality work. The timber works well, bends and polishes well and is easy to season. Having a low tannin content it is suitable for clothes pegs and brushes, toys, shoe hells, carving and panelling. GROWING PERIOD Perennial. COMMON NAMES Southern sassafras. FURTHER INF In Australia and Tasmania, the latitudinal range of the tree is 32-43.5°S. Southern sassafras is mainly found in gullies and along creek lines.
