BRIEF DESCRIPTION A tall deciduous tree reaching a height of 30-40 m, with a girth of 3-5 m. The bole is tall and straight, the bark grey to brown, peeling off in flakes, leaves obovate, elliptic to oblong, 14-23 x 9-14 cm and the crown large and spreading. USES The tree has edible fruits. The timber is of good quality and the leavers are used for elefant fodder. GROWING PERIOD Perennial. COMMON NAMES Chaplash, Chaplis, Chapalis, Lutta, Cham, Sam, Taungpeinne, Toung-peing-nai. FURTHER INF Chaplash is native of northeastern India, lower Myanmar and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It can be found at elevations up to 1650 m. It is adapted to moist conditions and require a fairly well-marked monsoon climate. The tree is shade-bearing in youth, but require a fair amount of light for its later development. It is not resistant to fire. Wood production ma be 15-40 m3/ha/year.
