BRIEF DESCRIPTION This herbaceous plant only develops rosette leaves in the first year. The erect, branched flower stems can in the second year reach a height of over 2 m. USES The roots and seeds yield essential oils used for flavoring liqueurs, gin, and vermouth, and in the preparation of perfumes, creams, soaps, salves, oils, shampoos, and cigarettes. The fruits are used in herbal teas. Leaves are eaten as salad vegetables, or used as garnish. Leaf stalks are candied and used in confectionery. The plant also heve medicinal properties. KILLING T Not sensitive to frost even in its vegetative period. GROWING PERIOD Biennial or short-lived perennial. Roots are harvested during the plant's first year and leaves and stalks are not collected until the second year. Plants die soon after flowering. COMMON NAMES Garden angelica, Angelica. FURTHER INF Scientific synonym: A. officinalis. The species is indigenous to Greenland and Iceland. The southern limit of its range is in the Carpathians, where it can be found in humid areas 700-1700 m above sea level. Yield in organic soils are usually higher than in mineral soils. Average yield of fresh roots is 7-10 t/ha, giving 1.7-2.5 t/ha of dry root drug and 6-10 kg/ha of essential oil.
