BRIEF DESCRIPTION A herb reaching 1-1.5 m in height with subterraneous, creeping, copiously branched rhizomes. Rhizomes 8-12 mm in diameter, hard, shining, dark brown to black. USES The rhizome is used as a spice and it also has medicinal properties. The fruit is used as a substitute for true cardamom. GROWING PERIOD Perennial. COMMON NAMES Lesser galangal.
