BRIEF DESCRIPTION A robust, tillering herb reaching 2-3.5 m in height with subterraneous, creeping, copiously branched rhizomes. Rhizomes 2-4 cm in diameter, hard, shining, light red or pale yellow. USES It is principally used as a spice and its rhizomes are very commonly used in South Asian cooking. The rhizomes also has medicinal properties. They can be extracted for an essential oil used to flavour liquors, icecream, pastry, etc. The flowers and young shoots are used as a vegetable or also as a spice. The fruit is used as a substitute for true cardamom. GROWING PERIOD Perennial. The rhizome develops quickly and reaches its best harvest quality 3 months after planting. COMMON NAMES Greater galanga, Galanga, Laos, Laja, Lengkuas, Puar, Langkauas, Palla, Padagoji, Kom deng, Pras, Kha. FURTHER INF Scientific synonym: Languas galanga, L. vulgare, Maranta galanga, Amomum galanga. Greater galanga is cultivated in all South-East Asian countries. The wild or half-wild varieties occur in old clearings, in thickets and in forests. In the tropics, it occur at elevations up to 1200 m. It is commonly grown in Malaysia and Indonesia. | Sources |
