BRIEF DESCRIPTION A medium-sized deciduous tree reaching a height of 10-33 m and a trunk diameter of 30-100 cm. The trunk is often straight and the crown irregularly spreading. USES The wood can be used for boxes, carpentry, interior parts of furniture, and firewood. Bark can be used for tanning and dyeing. GROWING PERIOD Perennial. COMMON NAMES Nepalese alder, Utis, Maibau, Indian alder, kunis, Kohi, Kunsh, Maibao. FURTHER INF Nepalese alder is indigenous to the Burmese hills, the Himalayas, to China's Yunnan, Szechuan, and Kweichow provinces, and to Indochina. It can be found in the Himalayan at elevations between 1000 and 3000 m, and between 300-1800 m in Hawaii. The tree occur naturally within the latitudinal range of 15-28°N. It is common in stream beds, near streams, in ravines, but also in drier forests and on old cultivated land. The tree fixes nitrogen, it is highly susceptible to wind damage.
