BRIEF DESCRIPTION A monocarpic rosette plant forming a 1-1.5 m tall trunk. The leaves are mostly 1-2 m long. Towards the end of its lifespand it produces a 5-7 m tall pole with yellow flowers. USES It is grown as a fiber crop. Fibers are used as binder and baler twine. KILLING T Damaged at -5°C. GROWING PERIOD Perennial. It require 4-6 years to first harvest, and leaves can subsequently be harvested twice a year. In Mexico the plant has a life cycle of 15-30 years. COMMON NAMES Henequen, Yacci, White sisal. FURTHER INF Henequen is commenly grown in the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico and in Cuba. It thrives in dry tropical climates. | Sources |
