BRIEF DESCRIPTION A tall tree reaching up to 60 m in height and more than 2 m in diameter at breast height. Trunk straight, cylindrical and without buttresses. USES Mainly used for tapping of Manila copal (papeda), which is a component of varnish and road paints. It is also used as timber, and is suitable for paperpulp and plywood. GROWING PERIOD Perennial. Annual height growth may be in the range of 0.5-1.5 m. Maximum age is unknown, but possibly several hundred years. COMMON NAMES New Guinea kauri, Kayu damar puth, Kessi, Uto, Fuko, Son datoe. FURTHER INF New Guinea kauri originates from New Guinea, where it is also cultivated. It occur from peninsular Malaysia to New Zealand, including Malesia, the Philippines, New Guinea, Melanesia and Australia. Its range extends from 10°30' N to 38° S, and from 96° E to 180° E. It occurs at elevations up to 1700 m or even 2500 m. It is found on diverse substrates including podzolized sands, ultramafics, carbonates and silicates. They often occur as discrete emergent trees, but sometimes form pure stands or are mixed in the lower canopy It is shade tolerant when young. Annual yield of large trees can be 10-20 kg of resin per tree. Trees smaller than 25 cm in diameter should not be tapped. (pH and temperature estimated by the compiler).
