BRIEF DESCRIPTION An aquatic herb. It has a stout cylindrical, branched rhizome. USES It is mainly grown for its underground stem that is powdered, and used in sachets and toiletries and it also has medicinal properties. The candied rhizome was at one time a popular confection. An oil extracted from the stem is used in perfumes and for flavoring beverages and food. GROWING PERIOD Perennial. COMMON NAMES Sweet flag, Calamus, Flagroot. FURTHER INF Sweet flag grows wild in marshy places and banks of streams in southern Asia, especially India and Sri Lanka. It is adapted to aquatic or semi-aquatic conditions. Mentioned as a useful agroforestry species.
