BRIEF DESCRIPTION A dense, bushy, evregreen shrub 2-3 m to a small tree reaching up to 8 m in height and 20 cm in diameter. On wind-swept, exposed coasts it can be reduced to a dwrf shrub of 50 cm. USES It can provide firewood and fodder. KILLING T It is sightly frost resistant. GROWING PERIOD Perennial evergreen shrub or small tree, with a fuelwood rotation of 7-10 years. COMMON NAMES Rooikrans, Red-eye. FURTHER INF Scientific synonym: A. cyclopis. Photosynthesis pathway C3. Rooikrans is indigenous to southwestern Australia and usually found on coastal sand dunes. It is indigenous to southwestern Australia and can be found at elevations between sea level and 300 m, and occur naturally within the latitudinal range of 25-33°S. The tree is drought hardy, fixes nitrogen, tolerates salt winds and sand blast, and regenerates rapidly. Mentioned as a possible agroforestry species. It is an extremely weedy species that can be spread by birds, and ones established, it is difficult to to remove. The tree has become a weed in South Africa.
