BRIEF DESCRIPTION A tall tree up to 40 m in height, while the trunk may reach a diameter of 120 cm. The trunk is straight and the crown dense. The tree is most attractive at flowering time with sprays of orange-red flowers. Sapwood varies from white to yellow, heartwood dark-brown to almost black, usually with straight grain and coarse texture. USES The wood is durable in the ground and when exposed to the weather. It is Australia's most attractive cabinet timber and is used for carved work, furniture, panelling, plywood, joinery and veneers. GROWING PERIOD Perennial. COMMON NAMES Black bean, Moreton Bay chestnut. FURTHER INF In Australia, the tree occurs naturally within the latitudinal range of 12.5-29°S at altitudes between 50-750 m. Black bean is common along streams and rivers in sheltered positions, it can also occur on terraces on mountain sides.
