BRIEF DESCRIPTION An evergreen tree growing 7-25 m tall. The leaves are pinnate with 3-5 pairs of obovate-oblong leaflets, 4-18 cm x 2-9 cm. The flowers are greenish-white, fragrant and about 5 mm long, while the capsule is yellow and red when ripe and about 6x3 cm. USES The pulp is edible only when ripe but not overripe or damage, if eaten at the wrong time, poisonning may occur due to the presence of hypoglycin A & B (reduces blood sugar). Carefully selected fruit arils are eaten fresh or cooked. KILLING T Young trees will not tolerate frost, and mature trees may not survive -3.3°C. GROWING PERIOD Perennial. Begin to fruit after 4-6 years. COMMON NAMES Akee, Seso vegetal. FURTHER INF Akee is native of the forests of West Africa. It is well adapted to humid conditions.
