DESCRIPTION: It is a slow-growing deciduous shrub to reaching up to 3-6 m in height. USE: Berries eaten raw, cooked or dried. The vitamin C content of the berries is high. The wood from this plants was sometimes used for arrows by native Americans. They also gathered the fruit to make large flat cakes which they added to soups and vegetables. Added to buffalo meat to make pemmican, and early settlers used to make pies, jelly and wine. GROWING PERIOD: perennial. COMMON NAMES: Pale serviceberry, Pallid serviceberry. FURTHER INF: It can be found in pine and fir forests, lodgepole forest, subalpine forest, foothill woodland, chaparral, valley grassland, alpine fell-fields and especially in moist coniferous forests in California. Found between 32-48°N and 115-125°E. |
