BRIEF DESCRIPTION A spreading, suberect or erect herbaceous legume reaching 15-80 cm in height with 7.5-12 cm long pods. USES It is grown for seed and as a vegetable. Dried seeds are used whole or split, while tender green pods are consumed as a vegetable. The plant also makes a good forage, hay, silage and green manure. GROWING PERIOD Annual legume, pods mature in about 80 days. COMMON NAMES Sowpea, Catjang, Hindu, Jerusalem pea, Marble pea, Catjan, Cowpea, Dolique, Kacang merah, Kacang peudjit, Kacang tunggak, Sadaek sa, Sandaek khmau, Sandaek kraham, Thwax sienx, Thua khaao, Thua rai, Po-thoh-saa, Dau ca, Dau trang, Dau do. FURTHER INF Scientific synonym: V. cylindrica, V. catjang, V. unguiculata ssp. cylindrica, Dolichos biflorus, D. catjang, Phaseolus cylindricus. Sowpea is native of India and Sri Lanka. On rich soil, vegetative growth is excessive and seed yield low, soils of medium fertility best suited for seed crop. Yields of dry seeds may in India be 1-2.5 t/ha.
