BRIEF DESCRIPTION A grass with ascending, spreading smooth and glabrous rather stout stems, reaching up to 80 cm in height and often branched at the base. USES The grass is palatable to livestock especially during the vegetative stage, when the grass is young and succulent. KILLING T Seedlings may resist -3 to -4°C for short periods. GROWING PERIOD Annual grass. COMMON NAMES Rigid ryegrass, Annual ryegrass, Swiss ryegrass, Wimmera ryegrass, C'hortam, Samma, Zaywahn, Sahleh, Zommeir, Sammah, Nusayl, El-shailem, Ruwaita, Irwaita, Hamaita. FURTHER INF Scientific synonym: L. strictum. Rigid ryegrass is common in the Mediterranean region. In Tunisia it can be found at elevations between 300-1200 m and in Iran and Irak up to 3500 m. |
