DESCRIPTION: It is a perennial plant with annual stems spreading from a central tuber. COMMON NAMES: devil's claw (English), sengaparile (Tswana) or duiwelsklou (Afrikaans). USE: The thick, fleshy secondary roots are the only parts which are used medicinally. It is used in the traditional african medicine for a wide range of applications such as stimulating the appetite, diabetes, hypertension, gout, peptic ulcers, fever, infectious diseases including tuberculosis, menstrual cramps, muscular aches and pains. In the western medicine it has a reputation for efficacy in osteoarthritis, fibrositis and rheumatism.
