BRIEF DESCRIPTION An open branched tree with large scarlet flowers and small black thorns, reaching a height of up to 20 m. Evergreen, or deciduous during periods of moisture stress. USES Used as shade tree, living fence, ornamental, windbreaks, and as a support plant for betel, pepper, vanilla, and grape vines. The wood is very light and soft and can be used as fish net floats, helmets, and insulator boards. The bark has medicinal properties. GROWING PERIOD Perennial. COMMON NAMES China coral tree, Mottled-leaf dapdap, Bagbag, Bakbak, Dabdub, Sulbang, Andoragat, Tall erythrina, Tall wiliwili, Chochin, Pangra, Pinle-kathit. FURTHER INF Scientific synonym: E. indica. China coral tree is native of coastal forests in Southeast Asia. It is widely distributed along seashores and sandy beaches in the Philippines. |
